DNP Education, Practice, and Policy, Essay Example

Words: 385

Essay

The DNP-prepared nurse must be fiscally responsible in his or her efforts to identify and address programmatic needs within the practice setting. At the same time, recognizing the need for change is essential to the discovery of new perspectives to improve nursing on a gradual yet consistent basis. This will demonstrate the knowledge that is required to promote change and the overall development of new perspectives that will influence the practice setting at a high level to meet the needs of the patient population effectively. From a fiscal point of view, understanding the budgetary process and the need to allocate resources appropriately is an essential task for DNP-prepared nurses, as they must be able to manage their funding and allocations appropriately and in an ethically responsible manner at all times (Donley & Flaherty, 2008). This reflects a need to examine how funds are used and if they are appropriate in managing the needs of the practice environment on a consistent basis.

Change management is also a critical factor for consideration within the portfolio of the DNP-prepared nurse, particularly as this reflects a need to expand evidence-based practice and integrate these teachings into the current practice setting, using change management as a guide for this process (Ahmed, 2012). Most importantly, DNP-prepared nurses must possess the knowledge and skill to develop change management strategies that will have an impact on patient care and influence the practice environment in a positive manner, using prior research and evidence in supporting these changes (Ahmed, 2012). From a nursing-based perspective, remaining stagnant may contribute to an increased number of errors and/or inefficiencies within the nursing practice environment; therefore, these issues must be corrected in an effort to produce effective results and to change matters that require improvements that will translate into higher quality patient care, increased education, and expanded technical knowledge to support nursing growth and development.
