Dr. Brown’s Course of Action, Case Study Example

Dr. Brown’s course of action is immoral and irresponsible. In fact, her behavior meets the criteria for serious mental disorder, Narcissistic Personality Disorder, which could be used by her medical providers as a reason to discontinue her treatment. She places her desire to assuage her own disappointment above the almost certain pain she will cause her child. That she chose not to reproduce during the years that it was possible was a reasonable and moral exercise of her free will. At this point, she seems unable to understand that choices have consequences. Dr. Brown chose to pursue her career to the exclusion of motherhood until age 50. This fact alone contradicts her claim that she “always” wanted to be a mother. Her chosen course of action over the past 22 years also demonstrates her fundamental lack of understanding of the role of a mother. If Dr. Brown’s aim was truly motherhood, she could have adopted a child 20 years ago. Instead, she places her own needs above those of her offspring, an inherently immoral position. Given her callous disregard for the wellbeing of the child, her quest can only be interpreted as narcissisti, as shown by the likelihood of her Dr. Brown’s death or serious incapacitation during the child’s lifetime. That she has nominally addressed this issue by naming a guardian does not mitigate the risk. Neurobiological research has demonstrated that disruption of the bond with the primary caregiver within the first five years of life can cause permanent neurological changes with results ranging from depression to reactive attachment disorder, which in adults may become sociopathy. No woman can guarantee that she will live to raise her child to adulthood, but those who have a reasonable expectation that they will not live that long face a moral choice. Were medical science so advanced as to allow Dr. Brown reasonably to anticipate another 20 years of healthy life, there would be no reasonable objection to her pursuit of motherhood. As it is, she knowingly pursues a course of action that will cause suffering to another, a child no less. If, as Adi Ophir argues, Evil is that which causes suffering, Dr. Brown’s actions qualify.
