Education Strategies: Problem Solving Concepts and Theories, Essay Example

Pages: 2

Words: 453

Essay

Briefly describe a problem that has been presented to your preceptor. Identify the steps of the problem solving/decision-making processes, which were utilized to solve the problem. Use the text or resources to note problem-solving theory and process.

A problem is defined as such when they hinder an established goal (Hardin, 2002). Challenges must be resolved in order to carry out the task at hand. A recent challenge to the overall goal of providing excellent care arose when there were more patients than staff on hand. After overcoming the initial shock that accommodates such shortage, I evaluated the situation and determined which patients were in dire need of care. The next step involved creating a schedule that placed urgent patients at the top of the list, and those with less critical needs near the bottom. Staff members’ breaks were tightly scheduled around the agendas of patients and, overall, the day turned out to be one of productivity.

Which communication modes do you use most frequently? Is this your preferred method and why?  Why not? Which mode of communication is the most difficult for you to institute in your daily life?

I often find myself using the auditory-oral mode when communicating. This is my preferred method of stressing my points because it allows me to demonstrate what I am verbalizing. Simple auditory-verbal communication is most difficult for me. Through the years, I have learned that people are more apt to gaining full understanding when they hear concepts and see examples of what is being conveyed.

Delegation:

  1. Is it difficult for you to delegate to others?
  2. Are you more apt to under delegated, over delegate, or delegate improperly?
  3. What safeguards can you build into your practice to decrease delegation errors?

Refer to the delegation decision-making the grid on the OBN website.

What guidelines does the Illinois Nurses Practice Act give regarding delegation and supervision?

I often find it difficult to delegate to others because I am constantly worried about the overall goal being accomplished. When assigning tasks, I tend to under delegate and take on the more difficult duties myself. Although the central goal is in my view, I often find that my process of assigning jobs becomes overwhelming. In order to prevent such problems, I can practice trust and dependability when working with my team. I can enforce accountability by taking note of tasks assigned and requesting progress reports. In addition, I can study my crew members and discover the areas in which they are most compatible. Such careful delegation builds a level of trust since I will have full confidence in my team’s ability to complete assignments.
