Effective Child Therapy, Essay Example

Effective child therapy is one evidence -based -practice adapted by psychologists when children seem to be inattentive, express difficulty in carrying out instructions and hyperactive. The approach is cognitive behavioral therapy. There are many agencies providing services utilizing this evidence based practice approach towards child care. The theory is based on evidence that people’s thoughts produce feelings, which further are manifested in moods. Ultimately, there are effects produced in the body such as a racing heart, anxiety attack or even fear.

Children like adults respond to these changes in the body and become inattentive apart from expressing more intense symptoms. Effective child therapy from a psychological evidence base approach would adapt approaches aimed at regulating the thought processes in the child/children controlling this behavior disorder. Two positive outcomes associated with this model are first parents learn how to provide environments for their children, which produce healthy thinking.

Most children show significant behavior changes even though therapy may be extensive and intense. One observed barrier to implementing this model is training of individuals to support parents during the process of effective child therapy. It is time consuming requiring effort from parents.

The Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) differs immensely from traditional approaches of treatment. First it is a clinical behavior analysis (CBA) utilized during psychotherapy. Its distinction lies in instead of attempting to change or alter thoughts, feelings, sensation, memories of events and other occurrences in life the individual is allowed to simply observe. The therapist then encourages the client to embrace those sensations/episodes not just only by accepting them, but see how beneficial they were to their own expression of life. The client is also stimulated into acknowledging that they did occur and understanding lessons learnt from them.

The traditional approach encompasses the assumption that the human mind is normal. It is further interpreted that if humans are psychologically normal then, there is no need for evaluations of its function. ACT differs disputing that assumption to contend that all normal human minds are destructive and need assessment. More importantly, ACT argues that all psychological suffering occurs due to non-confrontation of mind processing irregularities.

Mark Salzer is known for his contributions to peer support services in psychology. The contributions included social support from peers meaning nurturing positive psychological interactions with persons of similar culture, dispositions and mental health. His next significant input relates to experimental knowledge. In the scientist perspective people who have been through similar experinces share valuable knowledge that makes them peers who can support each other emotionally. An example are people who experienced the holocaust and survived. Another important theoretical assumption proposed by this stalwart towards development of the peer movement in psychology pertains to social comparisons theory, which is interpreted as people being more comfortable interacting with those who share similar characteristics. Examples are the same gender or psychological disorder.

The national registry for evidence based programs and practices (NREPP) is established to sensitize the public about research findings as well as advancements in psychology and mental health, which are accessible them. While the site serves as an information resource, which is very considerate of a public starving for information about their illness the information is limited.  Another positive element about the site is that it has a column where a client could search interventions.

However, the negative aspect is that a search box appears asking for persons to write. Some mentally ill people are incapable of articulating this feature. They might not know the correct key words to place in that box abandon the search. In my opinion this defeats the dissemination of information  purpose.
