Amur Leopard

An incredible number of life forms are playing a crucial role in this planet and aid the survival of man in one way or another. Unfortunately, the 6th mass extinction event in Earth’s history has taken effect upon some of these species which will consequently result to their total disappearance from the face of the earth. The different kinds of species serve a particular role in their respective ecosystems. When they are lost, it affects all the life forms around them. Amur Leopard is one of such species.

Where is it found

The scientific name of Amur Leopard is Panthera pardus orientalis. Amur Leopard is a subspecies of the leopard family commonly found in southeastern Russia in Primorye region  as well as northeast China in Jilin Province. About 19 to 26 species of Amur Leopard were documented to survive in 2007 according to IUCN report. However, the 2015 census data has indicated that 57 of the Amur leopards exist in Russia and 12 in China (Jackson & Nowell, 118-123).

The role of Amur Leopard in the ecosystem

The Amur Leopard plays a crucial economical, cultural as well as ecological role. Proper conservation of Amur Leopard is associated with some benefits to the rest of the species in its habitat such as the Amur tigers and the deer.

Why is the Amur Leopard endangered?

The Amur Leopard is a beautiful animal with spotted fur. The skin of Amur Leopard fetches a handsome amount of money, up to $500 to $1000, hence it is constantly poached. The habitat of Amur Leopard is surrounded by villages and farms that support agricultural activities thus increasing the vulnerability of the animal to poaching.
