The assessment class taught both the value and philosophy of assessments. Conducting assessments evaluates and reviews the qualities and needs of individuals and educational programs or institutions. During this class, I learned that there are important principles to conducting assessments, such as educational values, supporting student education, the complexity of individuals, the focus on individual core knowledge, goals for programs, and the ability to understand the need for assessments.
Assessment starts with education value. Understanding the value of assessments is the most effective part of assessments. For instance, understanding the different kinds of learning that students need is the initial starting point to help them strive to succeed. Educational values therefore, help sort out what needs to be evaluated and reviewed, as well as what is necessary for individuals to meet peak performance. Assessments can also support and enhance student education and learning at every level. Meaning, individuals can be assessed on a broad spectrum of different abilities, knowledge or skills.
Another important aspect of this class was learning the multidimensional learning that assessments have to offer. This class helped understand how learning is a complex process and how individuals are able to apply the knowledge and capabilities in which they own. In addition, this understanding of multidimensional learning has helped me to realize that assessments need to reflect a diversity of methods for both academic performance and learning.
The assessment course has also illustrated how assessments need to focus on all key areas of the individual learning process and development, such as the core academic subjects, intellectual capability, arts, and social and physical programs. However, it is also indicated that the assessments need to be based on the expectations and grade level appropriateness for each individual.
I think the main aspect of achieving a successful assessment is understanding the need for a clear goal or purpose. Knowing that assessments are goal-oriented, the need for having a clear vision or mission is absolutely necessary. Having a clear purpose with realistic goals is the foundation for assessments which are useful and successful.
The main result of taking this course allowed me to see the need for assessment programs. I gathered knowledge on the different levels of assessment that are present in programs, as well as the different types of goals. For instance, different teachers within a program may have different types of goals for student learning at the college level, program level and course level. Understanding the different levels is important to the assessment process. In addition, I learned the different types of activities included in an assessment, such as observation skills on individual nonverbal behaviors, how to ask questions, different types of group activities, how to develop tests or quizzes on learned concepts, how to survey individuals level of understanding, and using different types of assessment techniques in order to measure the individuals understanding.
It has also come to my understanding that assessments are a responsibility to individuals in order to succeed in education. The philosophy as an educator supports the necessity for proper assessment programs that meet the goals and expectations of each individual. In addition, it is a responsibility to review and report information in which we feel will improve the program, which in turn improves the outcome or end goal for each individual. Therefore, overall, I have learned the values and needs for assessment programs in the educational system. Furthermore, I have a competent understanding of the different types of assessment levels and processes. This course will help guide me further in my education and in my practices and studies as a graduate student, as well as develop sound judgement as I enter the work force and apply the assessment skills I have learned.
