The Bayside Center has run effectively due to the City Council member who has supported its programs for a distinct period of time. All companies, in some form, have to cut back specific things at some point in time in order to keep the operations running and keep the business afloat. This community based settlement house has been a venue for many people throughout the community who have needed its help and the City Council member has provided the grant for them to continuing doing this which requires that the center give her its utmost respect. Without the grant that she approved, the center would not be open and helping others to this day. It would be in the center’s best interest to contribute to the City Council Member’s campaign for reasons such as monetary gain, respect, and support for both parties.
By contributing to the City Council member’s campaign, the Bayside Center would be guaranteed their grant for the member’s next term. The center may even be able to receive additional grants in the future from the council member. In the short term aspect, the center would be able to continue running its programs and the council member would have a greater chance of being elected to office again. Having this person as council member would increase the chances of cutting back the risks of cuts in the center’s government grants and contracts in the future. In addition, the council member could be re-elected and help further the center’s mission and goals, both financially and socially by increasing the center’s public profile. As this happens, the city council member could even be more involved in what is happening with the center and this could help later in the future.
By contributing to the city council member’s campaign, both the Bayside Center and the city council member gain respect for each other. The city council member would know that she could count on the center to continuously support her throughout her campaign and throughout her time in office. In return, the Bayside Center knows that the council member will continue to support its programs. In addition, out of respect, the city council member would be able to speak to others on the Bayside Centers behalf in order to help with extra funding and to provide information and literature on what the organization does for the community. By working together, the city council member and the organization can bring good things to the community at large. Most importantly, the families involved will not have to suffer from loss of programs. Both the city council member and the Bayside Center benefit from this in the short term and in the long term.
The easiest way to find a solution for the short term is to support the council member in her campaign. However, if she does not win for some other reason, the best way to deal with this is to keep in contact with her. She may continue to help the best way she can or she may be able to even persuade the new city council member to continue helping the center as much as he or she can. In addition, if the city council member is not re-elected, the organization could ask for support from the new member. By doing this, it shows that the center is flexible enough to work with multiple people in the city council in order to continue to accomplish its goals. When doing this, communication is key and building relationships with others is of utmost importance. If a new council member were to come in, he or she needs to know that he or she is supported by the community. This is one of the best ways to get the center’s foot in the door. Yes! It will seem like they are only asking for money and attempting for monetary gain, but in the end, hopefully, the city council member will realize that the center is trying to make a difference in the community and will be more willing to help.
Long term policy changes that should be put into place to avoid a similar situation in the future would be for The Bayside Center to work with the city council member, whether she is re-elected or whether the other person wins. By doing this, the center is able to develop a relationship with both people and this will help them secure grants, extra money, and support in order to keep their organization running without losing any funds. Other long term policy changes would be to develop programs for grants and other monies with the city council members and with other organizations as well as asking for donations and trying fundraisers. This way, the center doesn’t have to depend solely on the help from the city council. Sometimes it is difficult to keep programs like this running due to financials specifically, but if the center has the support of the community and can establish a reputation with it, it has a better chance of earning trust.
In conclusion, the Bayside Center should continue to support their current city council member and contribute to her campaign. By doing so, the city council member has a higher chance of beating her competitor based on the reputation she has gained with the organization. By word of mouth, the organization eventually helps the city council member build her own reputation by showing what she has done for others during her term in office. This shows its loyalty to her and lets her know that the organization appreciates the things in which she has done for them throughout her time in office. However, if for some their current city council member does not win the election, the Bayside Center needs to be proactive and inform the new city council member of the great things the center does for the community. By doing this, the center could easily gain that member’s trust, appreciation, and loyalty as well. In reference to short term measures, the center needs to contribute to the city council member’s campaign and prove its loyalty and respect for all she has done. Long term policy changes could include working with city council members in general, getting donations from the community, attempting to put together fundraisers where the community can get involved, and applying for grants early in the year so that the center’s important services do not get cut and so that the center can continue helping the people within its community.
