“Fables: Legends in Exile” by Bill Willingham, Book Review Example

Pages: 1

Words: 294

Book Review

By writing this book the author exiled various characters from fairytales in New York City, because of some kind of mystifying adversary that slaughtered their people, thus forcing them out of their fairytale world. Eventually, Willingham has created a highly imaginative world of maturity, depth, and beauty using all possible aspects. The author has managed to depict and present the characters in a universe in a way that makes a reader sincerely care about them. All in all, the book is a magical epic classic in the making, thus I think it is the best graphic story produced in years. Fables: Legends in Exile is full of reinvigorating characters, refreshing dialogues, and careful continuity, which work through technical, practical, and mythological magnitudes. Willingham did a great job bringing the superfluity of traditional and common folklore tales into modernity, involving the believable mythical history. This particular book has completely possessed my attention, for I remembered such childhood heroes like Red Riding Hood, Snow White, and the Big Bad Wolf. The author put those characters in a set and situation I could never have imagined. The book is overall fun and comic, representing the cynical look at what happens to fairy tales in a modern contemporary world. I think that even without familiar characters being included, the plot of the book would still be interesting enough. Consequently, I think Willingham is not the one who goes for the obvious plot, thus making the characters more human than they were in the fairytales. For example, Snow White was depicted as a put-upon workaholic, serving as the Deputy Mayor of Fabletown. So, I have enjoyed this book and will definitely read the rest of the series, for it has greatly expanded my interest in traditional folklore as well.
