Step 1 – Empathy
Powerful empathy may assist in sustaining societal harmony and collaboration. Humans can communicate with each other via this process. I would gain the kindness of my user by making myself vulnerable. The ability to empathize is enhanced in two ways by exposing one’s vulnerability. Seeing the importance of empathy mirrored back to me might inspire me to be more compassionate in my interactions with my users. As a result, I will handle more complex situations with my users. I used visual communication emphasis strategies such as video still, video clips, and photographs, which explained how technology hindered family interactions at home.
Step 2- Define
Technology has made it difficult to establish a healthy relationship with technology amongst the family members because of the widespread usage of personal computers, tablets and smartphones. As a result of social media, video conferencing, and replying to emails, you may feel the need always to be “plugged in” online, which in turn minimizes the interactions amongst family members. Being disconnected from the Internet can make us feel like we’re losing out on important information. However, the problem is that excessive Internet use can develop into dependence on technology, making people neglect their social lives.
Step 3- Ideate
I used storyboarding and brainstorming ideation strategies to propose possible solutions to the problem of minimized family interactions due to internet addictions. I built my ideas with those of the users, which enabled me to develop new ideas. I kept the dialogue focused by dividing my users into small manageable groups. Participating in a brainstorming session with people from diverse experiences and perspectives can lead to more creative solutions. When I was embracing the storyboarding ideation strategy, users developed a visual tale that displays their ideas and probable results of those ideas. I observed my user’s journey, including the effects of my solutions, throughout the entire process.
Step 4- Prototype
The family and societal norms were that people should interact during family times. However, people prefer to use their technology devices instead of interacting. The above prototype will examine all the possible behavioural options and personal values that can bring a behavioural equilibrium between using technology and interacting during family times.
Step 5- Testing
I will test your prototype on real people by accomplishing simple tasks. The prototype will perform a variety of essential functions for me. Afterward, I will write down these instructions and see if my beginner tester understands and completes these tasks or not. Using this method, I will swiftly determine whether or not your prototype can accomplish the goals that I believe it should achieve. I will also make sure my product works in all scenarios in which your target audience will use it.
Conclusions
Human relationships have been fundamentally transformed by developing computer systems and the Internet, compared to the development of non-computer technical systems. There are both positive and negative outcomes to the modern-day shift in connecting people through intelligent applications and the Internet/Wi-Fi. Loved ones may now stay in close touch wherever they are on the planet because of the ubiquitous availability of Internet-capable clever gadgets. While technology has helped link individuals across the globe through the digital realm, those who are physically near one other are sometimes separated by their inability to disconnect from their mobile devices. This is known as Virtual Distance.
Part three: Summary of my contribution
I learned that an empathetic knowledge of the issue you’re seeking to address is an essential first step in using Design Thinking. I utilized empathy, defining, ideating, prototyping and testing decision thinking procedures. I also learnt that the Design Thinking method might seem linear, with one step leading to the next with a logical end at user testing. Design Thinking is a user-centred, flexible and iterative method that emphasizes the importance of bringing ideas to life based on the experiences of actual people.
The most successful part of this project was the defining part. During the emphasis stage, we gathered and created a lot of information that we combined. A substantial amount of data was collected at this stage to use during the following steps and to develop the best possible understanding of the users, their needs, and the problems that underlie the development of that particular product. Next time, I would do the ideating differently, where we shall think outside the box to get as many problem solutions as possible. I will ensure that I have embraced storyboarding in similar cases. When creating or optimizing processes, storyboarding will be a helpful tool. The participants will make a visual tale, showing their ideas and the different results of those ideas, enabling them to see what is working and what can be improved upon. I will observe my user’s journey, including the effects of my solutions, throughout the whole process.
