Family Related Child Abuse with Emphasis on Hispanic Origin

Research into these matters need to be conducted primarily within the households of the alleged abused child victims.  The children are coming to school with signs of abuse and making accusations that they are being disciplined by their parents’ in a non-conducive manner that is not acceptable to state laws and teachers of the society.

  1. Prior to the presentation the child, the child’s family, child’s friends and any other people with privileged information should be consulted.
  2. The reason for speaking to all of these people are to get a full view of the incident and make sure that stories are valid and determine who is indeed abusing the child, if any.
  3. Keeping in mind if there are signs of the abuse, it is confirmed.  If there are not, then the abuse should be validated before taking the incident further to authorities or Social Services.

  2. It should be considered when addressing these issues one should show empathy and respect towards the culture while addressing that the form of discipline is considered abusive in the United States.
  3. There is often a failure to distinguish between the abuse between families of good economic backgrounds and those stricken with poverty. [1](Chung, & Myers, 1998).
  4. Latino parents do have a tendency to over-discipline with non-traditional methods

  2. If there are any signs of further abuse a direct intervention by the police and Social Services should happen immediately.[2](Florida Health Department).

Conclusion

  1. In conclusion the key is spotting the abuse and being open for discussion if a child comes to you with an issue of abuse.
  2. Once that has been determined it is in the best interests of all to verify the abuse.
  3. Once verified, intervention needs to commence immediately.
  4. Education is the key to success with training the families to recognize and stop the abusive behavior.
  5. Follow-up should be conducted for at least six months to a year after reported incident and intervention is commenced.
  6. Increasing value of children and economic sufficiency of children is also a determining factor that needs to be instilled in teachers and families for child abuse to be prevented and stopped.[3] (Bethea, L., 1999).
