One of my favorite songs is “It’s Not My Place (In the 9 to 5 World)” by The Ramones. The Ramones were a New York based band that was active from 1974-1996. The Ramones are well known for playing fast and hard, a trait that can be seen in most of their songs with the exception of a few ballads and the cover songs they recorded. “It’s Not My Place (In the 9 to 5 World)” is about an individual trying to find their place in society and trying to figure out what they want to do with their lives.

Like many Ramones songs, “It’s Not My Place (In the 9 to 5 World)” is simple in nature and is reminiscent of the pop songs of 1960s of Motown and the British Invasion , as well as the harder rock of the 1970s. In the song, the singer is trying to figure out what he wants to do with his life. He notices that his parents, who work 9 to 5 jobs are always fighting, and as many rebellious individuals, does not want to be like them. Additionally, he fears that getting a 9 to 5 job will cause him to lose his identity and “Cause when it comes to working 9 to 5 there/Ain’t no place for me, ain’t my reality, to me” (Ramones).

The song is timeless because it helps to outline the struggle that many individuals have and how they try to cope with the world around them. Moreover, the song highlights the struggle that many individuals have when it comes to trying to find out what they want to do with their lives. Fortunately, the Ramones were able to forego having to get a 9 to 5 job and where able to fulfill their dreams of creating music, a testament that an individual can do whatever they set their mind to (even if they never get a top 10 song or a gold-certified record).

While “It’s Not My Place (In the 9 to 5 World)” may not be the ultimate song of rebellion, it does encourage others to find out what they want in life and to pursue their dreams. The Ramones never expected anybody to conform to their standards and it should not be expected that others conform to what they think they should do, but rather should follow their dreams and break the proverbial mold.
