Fetal Abnormality, Case Study Example

Pages: 1

Words: 333

Case Study

The subject at hand dwells around the theories of personhood, which seek to determine when an individual’s personhood begins. While this is a complex issue, all individuals involved in this case appear to have taken different stands. Jessica and Maria hold the notion that life is sacred. This is in line with the social consequences school of thought in the theories of personhood. Dr. Wilson and Marco hold the notion that the embryo has to be considerably developed to be considered a person. This is in line with the developmental school of thought.

The social consequence school of thought states that life is sacred on the basis of the social consequences that may result from ending life. This is the basis of Jessica and Maria’s belief that life is sacred, the reason for their need to seek divine intervention on the issue. Dr. Wilson and Marco believe that the development stage of the fetus determines personhood. This is the reason for the doctor suggesting the professional opinion of abortion. This is the same reason Marco is willing to accept any decision Jessica makes. He is predominantly indifferent to the whole issue.

I agree with the social consequence school of thought. I strongly believe that human life is sacred because the social consequences of ending human life are far more extensive than most individuals realize. The most considerable impact is usually experienced by the one carrying the fetus, in this case Jessica. This theory would considerably impact the recommendation to ensure that the fetus is left to mature to full-term, to the point of delivery. This would preserve the sanctity of human life.
