Five Elements of Emotional Intelligence, Essay Example

Emotional intelligence, EI, addresses the innate potentials of an individual that facilitate effective monitoring of individual emotions together with the emotions of others. (Kooker, Shoultz & Codier, 2007). Five elements of emotional intelligence are self-awareness, self-regulation, internal motivation, empathy and social skills (Kooker, Shoultz & Codier, 2007).

Self-awareness involves the potentials of an individual to identify and comprehend personal emotions as well as moods and the potential effects they have to other people. The competence of self-awareness is a factor of the ability of an individual to monitor the state of emotions and coherent identification of emotions associated with the individual (Sy, Tram & O’Hara, 2006). Self-regulation involves the capabilities of redirecting and controlling troublesome moods and impulses, the predilection of thinking before action and suspending judgments. Trustworthiness, integrity, and readiness to change are important ingredients of self regulation. Internal motivation entails the enthusiasm to work in anticipation of achieving internal reason that surpasses external rewards such as status and money. A sturdy drive for achievements, high optimism in situations confronted with failure and organizational commitment are vital components of internal motivation. Empathy implies to the aptitude of acknowledging emotional makeup associated with others (Sy, Tram & O’Hara, 2006). It entails skills that facilitate an understanding of other people on the basis of their inherent emotional reactions. Social skills relates to the proficiency of building networks as well as management of relations which translates to the potentials for buiding rapport and identification of a common ground.

Emotional intelligence plays a critical role in guiding the patterns of behavior and thinking and thus they have important implication to the future DNP- nursing practice in Obstetrics. Individuals with high levels of emotional intelligence are more talented in identification of feelings that are associated with frustrations along with disappointment, thus they can effectively deal with any impending negative effects. The future DNP- nursing practice in Obstetrics requires application of self-awareness, self-regulation, internal motivation, empathy and social skills for the nurse to be effective.
