Introduction
The rationale of this paper is to provide insight into the difference between persuasive and directive communication in organizations. The purpose of persuasive writing is to seek to persuade others to concur with our information, share our ideals, agree to our case and conclusion, and implement our position. On the other hand in directive writing, the purpose is to state a particular procedure or policy that the addressee is obligated to abide with or to follow (Dyer, 2006).
In the modern times, several organizations have set aside one day of the week, generally a casual Friday whereby the dress code is more relaxed. However, although the rules of dress for casual Friday are flexible, they do not change very much. Employees are expected to abide by a certain and most likely implicit code of appropriateness. In some cases employees tend to try out some ‘inappropriate’ dressing on casual Fridays and as a result the organization is bound to inform the employees on the appropriate dress code on casual Fridays. This can be done by either or directive persuasive communication.
Directive Writing
The rationale of this memo is to let all staff in this department know that the dress code for casual Friday needs to be reviewed. As you are all aware of, this department, unlike other departments in the organization, receives a great deal of customer traffic and at unexpected times. It is imperative that this department maintains the organization’s corporate image at all times. It is important that all staff in this department portray a professional image for our customers and visitors. The organization requires that all staff in this department comply with the formal dress code at all times including casual Friday. Any clarifications necessary concerning the contents of this letter should be directed to the departmental head. Thank you for the cooperation.
Persuasive Writing
One way of achieving higher levels of morale and increased self confidence in the corporate world is by representing a professional image at all times. This also leads to increased levels of productivity. This department is strategically positioned in the core business of this organization. Consequently, there is need for consistency in the manner that the staff presents professionalism in this department. The organization finds it appropriate to review the casual Friday dress code particularly in this department. The major objective for the casual Fridays is to enhance the staff morale. However, it is imperative that all staff in this department cooperates with the new decision by the organization that requires a review of casual Friday dress code.
We all like casual Fridays since they are days that we express freedom from the formal dress code as stipulated by the rules of the organization. Fridays also mark the beginning of the weekend, and consequently, the work-place atmosphere in general is likely to be more relaxed. However, it has come to that attention of the organization that there is need to maintain the formal dress code at all times in this particular department. This will facilitate all staff achieve higher levels of morale as well as increased self confidence and consequently increased levels of productivity. Representing a professional image at all times is fundamental in this department owing to the huge traffic of customers and visitors who come in at unexpected times. Please co-operate with these new changes.
