I looked into the mirror for a fifteen minute period of time. It was difficult. As I was looking in the mirror, it reminded me of my heritage. I am Chinese. I am satisfied with my body and my physical appearance. After I glanced in the mirror for approximately three minutes, I began to feel anxiety. The sentiment of gazing at my reflection in a mirror left me with a sense of nervousness and self-consciousness.
It is very rare that more than thirty seconds is spent glancing at myself in the mirror. I may spend a little bit more tine glancing at myself during my morninggroomingprocesses. The sentiment of looking at myself in the mirror for a period of fifteen minutes caused me to feel anxiety andnervousness.I looked at the parts of my face that I thought were attractive and also looked at the parts of my physiognomy that I thought were unpleasant. All in all, I was satisfied with what was found during my mirror encounter.
If I were a painting, I would be placed in the impressionist period. I have always been fascinated with the portrait by Vincent van Gogh. Vincent van Gogh painted his self-portrait after an altercation with Paul Gauguin. The self portrait of Vincent van Gogh that I am attracted to is a self-portrait where he has a pipe and the self-portrait where Japanese’s print (ukiyo-e) that is placed in the painting. I enjoy Vincent van Gogh’s expressive impressionist technique in both of these works of art. In my opinion, I would be able to relate with the Van Gogh works of art as a result of the influence that van Gogh received from Japanese Ukiyo-e pointing. This is a robustcharacteristic in the work of Vincent van Gogh. He is one of my favorite impressionists.
If I were a photograph, it would be in the style of Ansel Adams Moon and Half Dome. In my perspective, Ansel Adams is one of the most talented photographers of the twentieth century. Ansel Adams applied a lot of technical and visual genius to the art of photography. The manner by which Ansel Adams applied black and white in his work is very interesting to me.Ansel Adams does not apply color to his photography. It would be very difficult to replicate pone of Ansel Adams photographs. Even if a person were to voyage to Yosemite national parks, it would be difficult to replicate the lighting, the camera conditions and the conditions of developing the photograph that was applied by Ansel Adams.
Collectivism and individualism are concept’s that are hypothetically evaluated and associated with particular hypothetical consequences (i.e., health indexes, social behaviors). I think that it would be a matter of centrism compared toindividualism. The love of technology also influences my self-image and self-perception. I do not consider myself part of an in-group, therefore the technological perspectives applies well with me.In my painting and photograph, I am subject to the context of what is seen and the category of social behavior that states that I should be appreciative of the artists(Wang 108).
Culture is a concept that is very fuzzy and the lines between cultures in today’s technologically integrated world are no longer clearly delineated. In comprehending the manner by which culture can be related to the social phenomenathat we experience. It must be evaluated by the dimensions of culturaldifferences. The dimension of cultures that can be explored is the collectivist compared to the individual culture. The love of technology influences my perception of my self-image. This is attributed to the premise that in the digital age, we have access to takingself-portraits more frequently and at a lower cost than any other time in history. The collectivist perspective influences my taste of impressionist painting and my black and white Ansel Adams photograph(Wang 109).
I would say that I am a victim of bipolar thinking more than a supplier. I am a Chinese man. In China, we have a variety of healthful techniques that can be applied in order to reduce the symptoms of stress. Stress is what causes people to become purveyors of bipolar thinking. Tai Chi has been transformed in to a graceful exercise form that is excellent for reducing stress. The exercises of Tai Chi cause me to look at things in a relaxed way and to attempt to transmit the sensations of passiveness to others. Tai Chi is a balanced noncompetitive form of exercise that instillsself-confidence. I am a gradual person. The changes that I believe in do not frequently involve bipolar thinking.
I would say that the visual style of the Ansel Adams photograph, Moon and Half Dome influence my thinking. My perception may be bipolar; my thinking would be more similar to the Van Gogh s impressionist self-portrait. The colors in the Van Goghself-portraits are bright and flow. This is the type of thinking that I like to perceive myself in being engaged. I do not wish to emulate van Gogh’s personality, how4ever, his use of colors is brilliant. This is the type of reelection that I strive to fulfill.
There are the correlated dimensions of the collective self-construct. These associations are connected with the self – other connection, the construct of reliance and the constructof self-orientation. The dimension that is associated with the self-construct is referent to the individual’s self-perception as a different identity from what is being promoted by society.Studies have demonstrated the difference between the individuals who are part of a trend toward the perception of the self as a completely different identity than the in- group and the others in the environment who have the tendency of perceiving the self as the in group’s extension. The dimensionofreliance is referent to the self-perception as an independent person or as anindividual who is reliant on others in the society (Wilson 48).
The dimension of self-orientation is referent to the individual objectives and the accomplishments. It may be that the individual’s mental behaviors and activities are directed toward internal or externally directed objectives. The self-direction that has an individualistic nature is directed toward the objectives that the individual may manifest or the personal accomplishments. These characteristics arte usually evaluated by introspection (Wilson 49).
The self-orientation of Chineseconsumers has been described as being distinct from the perspective of self-direction. The consumers in Chinese culture demonstrate a dimension of self-direction that is collectively based. In addition, the Chinese consumers associate more with others in order to gain an amplified self-perception.In advertising, the advertising matrixes are different in the Far East. Research has demonstrated that advertising that is directed towards audiences that are located in Korea is more likely to have collectivists themes than the advertising that is applied in the United States (Wilson 49)
The inferences that can be derived from these types of advertisements must have the quality of connecting with the consumer on a cultural and individual level, in order to be effective. Research has demonstrated that the headlines that demonstrate a greater number of benefits that are directed toward the in- group are more effective in markets with Chinese consumers (Wilson 49).
SEVEN
There are a great number of individuals who would wish that they could be another person or to exchange physical characteristics with others. There are many individuals that wish that they could supplant another person’s social standing even if it were for oneday. This could be to supplant someone of whom they felt covetous. There are some who are quite satisfied withthemselves (Prince 3).
I am one of those persons who have learned to be satisfied. In China, the self is rarely ever a permeant fixture. The self is constantly changing. In the making of the self, the media applies the characteristic of homogeneity. This causes us to have a self pecdfep0tion that is collectivist and as a culture we take notice of persons who do not fit into the same cultural mold. An example of this would be a Malaysian commercial that was viewed in China. Many of the Chinese had no idea if it was a commercial or a public service broadcast. The fact that he was different and promoting a product with an alternate identity that was different from the collective identity of the Chinese caused many of the Chinese viewers to be tuned out (Wilson 50). Here inAmerica, it is different. This is an individualisticsociety where individualism and the ethnic differences form the American tapestry of multiculturalism. I am happy to be in the United States with Americans.
Conclusion
The impressionist’s paintings that I selected were Vincent van Gogh’sself-portraits. The photograph that I can reflate with is the Ansel Adams Moon with Half Temple. The impressionist paintings and the black and white photograph have little to do with the influence of Western or American culture on my tastes. I chosethose pieces of art due to my tastes. These are what I like. AnselAdamshas taken excellent picturesover his career. Vincent van Gogh is one of the most well acknowledgedimpressionists. As I looked into the mirror, I realized the benefits that I have of being able to realize while living as an individual in a multicultural society. That is very important for me from a Chineseperspective. In China, we are almost 1.4 billion Chinese. The advertising and the media is different from the United States. Anyone who is different gets noticed and if the message that is not important or beneficial to the in-group, no one will pay attention and many of the Chinese will become confused. The multicultural interactions are why I am happyto be in the United States of America.
