Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut, Book Review Example

Vonnegut’s point in Harrison Bergeron is that the globe is ultimately living up to the United States 1^st amendment of everybody being created equivalent. Vonnegut does this through the prediction of the future. For instance, he does this by making an effort to divulge and counsel the risks of being too equivalent or too undeserved. He articulates that within this social order, the talented, strong, and attractive, are needed to put on earphone handicaps, hefty weights, and repulsive masks, correspondingly. Therefore, these constrictions leave the globe equivalent from brains to muscles to good looks. With humanity continually pushing for egalitarianism among individuals, Vonnegut exposes humankind, which society is conscientiously working toward (Vonnegut 234).

Vonnegut wrote such a story so that he can enlighten humankind that a great deal of impartiality is not good at all. For example, this is shown as he sarcastically puts forward that for each person to be equivalent, the people who go beyond the mark are supposed to be brought downward to the average. Consequently, outstanding talent and magnificence is lost (Vonnegut 236). This means that various individuals ought to have better views or looks compared to others for the globe to be a superior place, or else extraordinary persons would not exist to make the globe an improved place.

The story was not to tell us how magnificent life would be with practically no personal freedoms. The story presents both limits of egalitarianism and inequity and implores the social order to opt for the median. For example, this is shown within the case of Harrison Bergeron’s blood relations. Harrison’s biological mother, Hazel, is portrayed as having average intellect, whereas his father, George has intellect way beyond normal. For them to alleviate their intellect to the matching level, George had to put on a little intellectual handicap radio within his ear (Vonnegut 234).
