Health Risks of E-Cigarettes Emerge, Essay Example

Essay

New studies have shown that electronic cigarettes, which are claimed to be safer than regular cigarettes, introduce  toxic chemicals into the lungs. The e-cigarettes may also make bacterial infections to be resistant to antibiotics.

Santon Glantz, The Director of the Centre for Tobacco Control Research and Education at the University of Carlifonia, and his team of researchers found that e-cigarettes produce high levels of nanoparticles which can trigger inflammation, thus, linked to asthma, stroke, heart diseases and diabetes.

More than 250 different brands of e cigarettes are in circulation and a variety of solutions are being used to generate the cigarette’s vapor. Priscilla Callahan- Lyon of FDA establishes no safety in the substance’s vapor. In her study, she finds the vapor to contain traces of the solvent in which nicotine and flavor had been dissolved. According to her, the solvents are lung irritants and can turn into carbonyls, which include cancer causing chemicals such as formaldehydes, carcinogens and acetaldehydes.

The second generation e- cigarettes are being introduced and enable the user to increase the vapor’s voltage and temperature thus atomizing more nicotine per puff. Such cigarettes have adverse effects on the user as explains Mercej Goniewicz of the Roswell Park Cancer Institute IN Buffalo, N.Y.  The e-cigarette users of the second generation increase the power on their device. Formaldehyde levels can reach those found in tobacco smoke. Glantz says that such compound are only harmful in smoke if they happen to get into the lungs. It is more dangerous when they are in vapor state as they get into the lung very easily and in huge amounts. Cigarette vapor can make dangerous germs difficult to kill as discovered by Laura Crotty Alexander.
