Case Study

Part 1

Mr. J.K is 56 years old male, with diabetes since 35 years old. He receives Medicare and fluently responded to the following questions.

  1. What do you think are the greatest strengths and weaknesses of health care in America?
  2. I think it is insurance coverage. Many people like me who have diabetes do not get optimum care because Medicare and Medicaid coverage is limited.
  3. Can you briefly describe your experiences with the health care system? What has been most beneficial in your dealings with the health care system? Most concerning?

A.I must be thankful for the medication I receive without any copays. Diabetics need regular checkup due to the complications related to eyes, kidneys, and blood pressure among other things. Thank God I am covered and being given these services without any extra cost. Also, my glucose meter as free, but the reagents are not covered so often I have to pay out of pocket. This is my most concern since these reagents are very costly.

  1. Do you think the quality of health care is getting better, staying the same, or declining in your community? The country? Why?
  2. As it is I would say it is getting worse because more people are dying and the cost of health care continues to rise. With the present cost of living people can hardly find money for food much more to pay medical bills and insurance. Consequently, more sick people cannot be seen by doctors because they have no insurance.
  3. How do you see national health care reform as affecting you? Do you believe it is a good idea? How so?
  4. From what is being said on the news it sounds good if every America will have a chance to get insurance at a reasonable when they do not qualify for Medicaid. However it this Obama care many are complaining that it is not as wait was promised some people’s health care benefits have been reduced due to their income, but it was promised to them that it will remain the same. If my benefits will be reduced or taken away due to my income I will die.

I learnt from this interview that people are still dissatisfied with health care in America and the economic crisis and impacted negatively on quality of life as it related to health care accessibility.

Part 11

Mr. J.K did not know State the group affiliation of his beneficiaries. I was very touched when he spoke about the cost of living in relation to accessibility to of health care in America. I did not expect such emotion relating to cost of reagents. One message I would like them to carry into management is coverage of reagents by Medicare/Medicaid. Why is it so costly?
