The inspiring stories of women pursuing careers popularly occupied by men give details about the challenges experienced in Alberta, especially water shortages and wildlife invasion that forced many women-owned ranches to use lights to chase away wildlife, among other innovative techniques used to store water and increase security.

The book gives a detailed history of several ranch owners and their influence determined by their kept animals. This analogy provides the life of Alberta cowboys as people who rode on horses, grazed cattle, sheep, and goats of pure breeds, and their social life incredibly defined their social life.

Oetelaar discusses the ease of overcoming adolescence and delinquency in the ranches where discipline was paramount. In addition, the book gives oral histories and accounts of the ranch family members at different times.

The children are raised confined to yards and watched due to reduction of space in the backyards and a lot of activities that the children have to learn quickly to fit in. the lessons in a rural setting are those of survival, joy, discovery, and firsthand experience, unlike what the parents assumed were of naivety and, hard work.
