He is very loyal, trustworthy and obedient towards Hamlet. He provides Hamlet with a constant source of support as he is the only character that does not undergo any transformation throughout the play. This makes him particularly suited for his utilitarian role. Shakespeare is believed to have given Hiratio the utilitarian character to heighten the suspense in specific segments of the play. Hiratio acts as Hamlet’s ear, in a way becoming an ear to the audience. This provided the audience with a clear build-up of Hamlet’s character. The stability of Hiratio’s character is depicted in his calm and composure in confronting a ghost. He demands that the ghost speak;

He is the standard of truth and virtue throughout the play. This is enhanced by his stable and unchanging character. In all the chaos, he is the voice of reason and calm. He vindicates all actions taken by all the other characters,

In conclusion, Hiratio serves two very important roles. Both these roles affect the main character, Hamlet as well as the audience, in their outlook towards other characters. He assumes a utilitarian role within the play, heightening suspense at certain instances within the play.
