Research Paper

Case study 1: Increasing use of mammography among older, rural African American women: Results from a community trial

Univariate, univariate, bivariate and multivariate statistical applications.

  • Chi –square table 2 (Univariate)
  • Inferential statistics Table 1( multivariate)
  • Descriptive statistics table 3( multivariate)
  • Inferential statistics (CI) Table 4 ( Bivariate)

Discussion

From observation the researchers provided details, but not enough to show how clustering was handled. Cluster analysis clearly shows how variables are classified according to their level of importance or significance. In this study variables displayed in figure 3 were clustered, but in the methodology section the reader could not clearly identifyhow  researchers arrived at these categories.

Stratification was performed by initially conducting a stratified random sampling technique. A repeated cross sectional design followed, which from my observation impacted the study outcome. The self-reporting strategy could have compromised validity of results  by forcing  statistical analysis adjustment of data to accommodate the discrepancies incurred in the self reporting process (Earp, Eng,  O’Malley, Altpeter& Rauscher, 2003).

Case study 11: Effects of a community-based intervention on physical activity: The Pawtucket heart health program.

Univariate, univariate, bivariate and multivariate statistical applications

This case study contained no major statistical applications.

Standard deviations were calculated and could be considered a univariate statistical application. Percentages were  alsocalculated. Page 1743.

Discussion

No explanations regarding calculation of clusters were given. The researcher conducted cross-sectional surveys of 7, 5629 persons in Pawtucket heart health program. These were compared in a another survey of 7,7032 residents in another city. They displayed  data applying  mainly qualitative explorations. The design definitely affected analysis of data because it appeared that researches adapted a mixed method (Eaton, Lapane, Garber, 1999).
