How Do Caribbean Encounters With Capitalism? Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 220

Essay

How do Caribbean encounters with capitalism (e.g. Tourism, free trade zones, Hollywood, drug trafficking etc.) produce local interpretations of professionalism and consumerism that expose the shortcomings of post colonial dreams of prosperity?

Professionalism is interpreted in the Caribbean by imitating and capturing  foreing working class  values. For example, one way in which this can be cited is by employees adopting  certain clothing styles when performing work duties.   This clothing culture seems aligned to the American/ British perception of professionalism.  More importantly, employees who work in government offices and lawyers or doctors, wear corporate clothing. This includes suit attire, which is one of the most popular professional demonstrations. Hair styles also have to be compatible. Women hair have to be neatly well groomed while men have are clean shaved for the office environment.

The paradox here lies in the fact that these corporate employees adapt this culture while working for almost the same wages as factory workers. However, their attire communicates professionalism while factory workers are perceived as the lower working class population.  Brightly colored uniforms are used y women to add heir taste of individuality to the profession. Nurses are known to articulate this type of professionalism in their dress culture. As such, these adaptations produce local interpretations of professionalism and consumerism that expose the shortcomings of post colonial dreams of prosperity.
