Creative Essay

Activity 1

Use a two-column chart to list ways that you think Jim’s overall character is similar to and different from the blackface characters of minstrel performances. At the bottom of the chart, draw a conclusion about Jim’s character based on your findings.

Similarities Differences
1. “white commentary on minstrelsy assume its accuracy, its essentially faithful imitation of African-American speech, singing and dancing.” 1. “white entertainers put on blackface and “imitated” or “caricatured” slaves in the South and ex-slaves in the North.”
2. “white audience would have been with the stereotypes of minstrelsy” 2. “Huck’s lines one hears the correct accents of Mr. Interlocutor, and in Jim’s replies, the comic inadequacies of Mr. Bones.”
3. “white readers would have seen nothing wrong with a “minstrel-show” version of an African-American. But the question of what kind of “source” minstrelsy was for MT’s novel remains unanswered by a reference to the racist prejudices of his popular audience” 3. “The minstrel show is one kind of entertainment that the King and Duke don’t attempt in Huck Finn.”
4. “conversations between Jim and Huck that seem most clearly to echo these kinds of routines. “ 4. “commentators disagree on how to characterize the minstrel show as a source for the novel.”
5. “when I look at Kemble’s representations of Jim, I don’t see a human being, but this same caricature.” 5. “what kind of “source” minstrelsy was for MT’s novel remains unanswered by a reference to the racist prejudices of his popular audience.”
Conclusion

Although some parallels may be draw between Jim and minstrels, Jim’s simplicity is only superficial upon careful reading the Huck Finn.

Activity 2

Is Huck Finn a racist novel?

Huck Finn is a racist book Huck Finn is not a racist book
1.” Twain used the “N-word” 206 times, according to Wortham. “Each time that word is used is calculated” by Twain for its shock value for an audience that at the time was unaccustomed to literature written in the vernacular, he said.” 1.” For A. Robert Lee, ” the moral centre of Huckleberry Finn… inevitably… has to do with slavery… and… the ruling illusions of white racial ascendancy and Southern chivalry.”
2.” Jim was an encumbrance for Huck. There’s been a great deal of romanticizing about the bond that the two of them form on the voyage down the river. But Huck never realizes slavery is wrong.” 2.” It seems quite normal, though, that a boy raised in the South in the middle of the last century would use this word. It is clear, too, that Huck’s experiences with Jim and his actions were contrary to the language he spoke.”
3.”Was Huckleberry Finn a racist? “Yes,” Wortham said. And so was Mark Twain.” 3.” “He was thinking about his wife and his children, away up yonder, and he was low and homesick; because he hadn’t ever been away from home before in his life; and I do believe he cared just as much for his people as white folks does for their’n.”
4.” Although Tom knew that Jim had been set free by his owner already, the two boys engaged in a long struggle to free Jim. He had to undergo humiliating, painful procedures, and in Leo Marx’ words, Jim had been “made over in the image of a flat stereotype: the submissive stage-Negro.” 4.” As their raft drifted down the river, Huck for a while continued to play mean tricks on Jim. But he gradually became aware of Jim as a human being, not just as a superstitious slave.”
5.” As Huck and Jim came ashore again, Jim was imprisoned. Tom Sawyer appeared, and he quickly became the central character.” 5.” Jim…had run away from his master, because he feared to be sold down the river. It is out of question that Twain wanted his readers to feel sympathetic toward Jim.”
Conclusion:  Huck Finn not a racist book
