Insofar as Performance Technology (hereinafter: PT) is rooted in the aim of ameliorating the performance of a given organization, PT must directly confront issues related to human performance. Whereas such problems can assume a myriad of forms, PT advances a systematic approach to delineating and resolving impasses, whereby factors such as the organizational values, missions, goals, and workplace environment analyses contribute to the process of critical evaluation.

A specific and common human performance issue such as worker motivation can have profound negative organizational affects. Hence, worker motivation may become an issue which PT will attempt to resolve. Motivation problems vis-à-vis human performance can engender a wide range of corollaries, such as decrease in productivity, breakdowns in communication between members of the organization, and an overall degradation of the workplace environment. Hence, motivation can negatively impact some of the cardinal points which PT attempts to analyze in terms of an organization’s overall performance, and thus becomes necessary to address. Following its systematic approach, issues of human motivation will become apparent to PT at its first stage of performance analysis. Hence, distinct fields of analysis such as worker relationships and responsibilities, the general work environment, how work is being conducted, and ergonomics could all be affected by motivation issues, to the extent that the latter hinders the efficacy of the entire organization.

In this regard, PT must propose a resolution to the specific conclusions of its analysis. In this case, the analysis of problems of human performance and motivation, having been identified through a systematic approach, entails that an appropriate solution can be proposed. PT resolutions may be diverse, as the system is essentially open: however, a re-evaluation of incentive is one of the common PT solutions to resolve motivational issues. PT approaches will rely on meta-analyses and survey results to determine the extent to which various forms of tangible incentives may alleviate the given problem. Accordingly, PT applied in a specific context would gauge the viability of such an approach, and therefore decide as to its appropriateness in the given context.
