In the below analysis the author would review the following news article: Lazenby, H. Base-metals producers expected to focus on cost control, productivity. (2012) The main focus of the review would be productivity and competition in the global marketplace.

The article talks about metal producers’ challenges on the global marketplace, due to the low cost manufacturers’ entrance into the market. Therefore, the companies’ management is focusing on process improvement, productivity and profitability, instead of carrying out investments. Although the demand for base-metals has increased in recent years, especially due to the infrastructural developments in China, the main operations management focus is on improving the quality of production and the production processes in general. This would definitely have an impact on the human resources departments’ planning procedures, as well. The conversion process has a great importance, in order to ensure that companies are following up on productivity trends.

According to the article, it is evident that there are a few human resources challenges involved in the changes of the marketplace, covered in Chapter 9. Focus on training and development needs to be enhanced, and the common evaluation techniques need to be improved. Performance feedback systems are essential for process improvement. Human resources planning would also be affected by the changes; focusing on improving skills instead of expanding the organization. The forecast of human resources demand is essential in order to be able to fulfil the demand of the market and the qualification of the employees needed to fill the jobs. Further, training and development needs to be designed around the new operation management guidelines, in order to maintain the firm’s competitive advantage.
