Classical plays such as Shakespeare’s Hamlet portrayed in a more modern community of theater audiences specifically shows how heater art actually develops through time. Such an evolution gives a perfect glimpse on how the modern society accepts classical theatrical plots given that it appeals to their thinking and their current social situation. As written by Paul Rudnick, the play is presented to have taken place in an old apartment in the city of New York. Hoping to take on the role of Hamlet in a play, Andrew Rally is presented as a frustrated actor who aims to gain a name in the theater industry. With all the people surrounding him who affects his characteristic and his decisions in life, he is presented as somewhat confused between deciding on what he needs to be done to be accepted by the people he loves or be accepted by himself and attain the goal of becoming famous and earn as much as he wants to.
In the play, the women portray a great role on how Andrew Rally develops a particular identity that the audiences could relate to. First in line is Frances Vella, the real estate broker, who aims to keep Andrew within his apartment making it harder for him to move on. Her character insists a distinct flow of spiritualism and life into the play. Although she did not have many spoken lines in the first act, the change of situations between each turn of the play gives the character of Frances a more evidently noticeable value in relation to how she affects the being of Andrew as well as to how she is able to shape his decisions. Mary Fitzpatrick, on the other hand, specifically gives a distinct impact on how Andrew’s career flourishes through time. Although she had some specifically negative characteristics such as being a chain smoker, the encouragement she gives Andrew is strongly affecting on how he manages his life and his career. Ann Madaille, his girlfriend, appears to have the greatest impact on his confusing situation and the decision he wants to make according to such matter.
The role of these women treated in a comedic approach makes the whole play a distinct impact on how it specifically sends out a message about making decisions and facing life’s challenges. The set of the presentation was able to bring about a sense of distinction on how the situations change from one act to another and how the environment specifically defines the concept of thinking and personal development of each character in the show.
The costumes were also detailed to make sure that each piece of clothing would be able to bring about a better sense of distinction on how each character develops through each scene change. The women, who are supposed to impose effect on the being of Andrew and the decisions he makes in his life were given easily recognizable clothes that determine their behavior and their characterization accordingly. Notably, this adds to the conception of the audience towards the role that each woman plays in relation to the development of Andrew’s character. The choice of actors to take on the challenge of portraying the roles in the theater could be considered superb. Notably, their capacity to bring fluidity into their characters and the overall plot of the story makes the actors specifically fitting into the play. This is the reason why although this classical act has been well celebrated in its original form, the comedic way of determining the connection that this play has on the current modern living of the target audience seems effective enough to capture the attention and retain such interest among the viewers from the beginning towards the end of the presentation.
