Improving Computer Science Education, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 312

Essay

Google is currently committed to improving computer science education for children and has many programs focused on helping girls and women gain necessary coding skills. This initiative falls under ISO standard 26000, “Social responsibility”. Specifically, this initiative could be classified as “respect for stakeholder interest” (ISO, 2010). Since Google is a company that is well-known for hiring advanced computer scientists and there is an apparent disparity against women in the field, the company is implementing this community program to help develop the interests of women in computer science, thereby closing this gap (Mulhere, 2015).

It would be interesting to determine the statistical goals that Google believes that their computer science education initiative would achieve. Specifically as it pertains to the percentage of women who will enter the field of computer science as a consequence of participating in the program. In addition, it would be interesting to determine how much money Google is specifically providing to school programs to achieve this training. Overall, it is important for children to receive technology education during their primary and secondary school years because technology is becoming increasingly important in the world today. If adequate training is provided at this level, individuals who wish to enter the field of computer science at the college level will be able to more meaningfully contribute to the existing wealth of knowledge that currently exists. By doing so, progress will be achieved more rapidly.

Encouraging young children and women to participate in computer science education is important because of the many social implications it has. Overall, the world as a whole should be made more aware of these skills so that each individual has a better chance at supporting him or herself in a manner that also positively contributes to society.
