Informatics in the Doctor of Nursing Practice Curriculum, Essay Example

Pages: 2

Words: 428

Essay

The American Association of Colleges of Nursing continues to influence doctoral nursing practice in significant ways and has been effective in advancing the objectives of nurses at this level in areas such as informatics, where recommendations in documentation software, quality improvement, and meaningful use recommendations have been made (AACN, 2006; Burkart-Javez, 2014). It is important to expand the level of knowledge and resources available regarding informatics because this strategy is essential to the continued growth and expansion of the practice environment in areas such as population health and evidence-based practice (Jenkins, Wilson, & Ozbolt, 2007). However, informatics requires a detailed understanding of the benefits of these systems and how they will be integrated into current healthcare practice settings; therefore, these considerations must be addressed prior to software or program implementation.

The selected project and subject area requires the adoption of information technologies in order to be effective in communicating the needs of COPD patients that will be addressed through comorbidities for co-management tracking for patient care quality and improvements, and other considerations. In the DNP role, it is necessary to address plans of care using technology-based solutions in order to demonstrate the significance of efficiency and cohesiveness in the DNP role with respect to plans of care for the designated COPD patient population (Doenges, Moorhouse, & Murr, 2014). It is important to emphasize the value of these technologies in advancing the practice environment and in establishing plans of care, while also considering the level of efficiency that may be achieved with these tools, as there are a number of limitations that often exist within the practice setting that may increase the number of errors, limit patient progress and recovery, and may also influence how nurses respond to the practice environment. Therefore, these tools must be used as a guide in supporting the needs of the patient population in question and in advancing their care and treatment to the highest possible level.
