Internet Distraction, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 316

Essay

Whereas it is hardly astounding that surfing the web is a potential cause of distraction among students, schools should be cautioned against wiring classrooms with the aim of enhancing learning among the students. Majority of schools have opted to implement networked classroom technology in attempts to improve learning among their students. This technology requires that, the students make use of laptops in class in the course of lectures. The intended use of the laptop is taking notes which are believed to increase the efficiency of the learning process for the benefit of the student. However, it is apparent that, the use of such a technology causes more harm than good among the students who are otherwise anticipated from such developments. A substantial amount of time spent by the students on these laptops is most likely to end up in multi tasking. Consequently, the greater likelihood is that the laptop will distract the student using it as well as fellow students, therefore leading to a significant effect on student grades and the possibility of losing attention in class by the student.

Further effects of internet distraction on students have been documented. The use of internet has a negative relationship on a variety of other measures of learning among students such as overall performance in the course and effective understanding of the course materials being taught. The students are particularly attracted to other things that take much of the time that could otherwise have been used for note taking during the learning process. This is the worst form of distraction that causes loss of attention to course materials and consequently lowering of the students’ grades after evaluation. Schools that aspire to use such technologies with ultimate aim of improving learning among the students must therefore consider the negative aspects associated with this development and take the relevant control measures before the technology ruins the academic life of the students.
