As opposed to facts, it is more challenging to reach agreements on morals and ethics because they are subjective in nature and often vary across cultures. But we also know that social ethical and moral values have historically improved over time and many acts that were norms once such as segregation now violate the moral and ethical values of the progressive societies. Every social reform has been met with opposition initially but one should not be afraid to speak for the right cause. Eating meat may be a norm now but it is immoral in essence and the time has come for the society to give due rights to animals.

Eating meat is immoral because it assumes value of life depends upon one’s intelligence level. Animals are same as human beings and the only difference between us and them is intelligence. Even among us, people have different levels of intelligence but the society values each life equally. It is ironical we have somehow decided animals’ lives do not have the same value because as a species they stand below us in intelligence.

Eating meat is immoral because our meat comes from animals who are treated as objects and not living creatures. They are not even allowed to enjoy whatever short lives they have due to the growth of factory farming. Being confined in cages mean they never get to have any social relationships and are given antibiotics and growth hormones for artificial growth and development to make them fit for human consumption. To fulfill our desires for meat, we have started treating animals like inanimate objects without any rights and our ever growing appetite for meat products only serve to promote the growth of factory farming.

It is now clear that eating meat is immoral because it devalues animal life. Social progress often demands sacrifice on personal level but such sacrifices are worth because they help improve social values and norms. We should abandon meat products so that animals are able to enjoy the rights they are entitled to as living creatures.
