Is the Fetus a Person? Reaction Paper Example

In response to the article “Abortion: A Moral and Political Issue”, it can be seen that the writer is both against abortion and pro-choice to some extent. I agree to the stand and points made. It is imperative that we consider life as scared. This sanctity extends to a cell that is developing to a fetus and eventually a full-term baby (Schroedel, 2000). However, in cases where abortion is necessary, it should be allowed and no one should pass judgment. I agree that no one should be forced to raise a baby conceived by rape. A woman must be given that choice but to a certain point. I agree that abortion must be regulated because like drugs, the potential to abuse it is high. As a matter of fact, there are about 42 million abortions being done annually worldwide and about 115,000 per day. Statistics has it that 50% of women that choose to abort their baby are younger than 25 years old. Hence, I agree that abortion is being used by some people as a contraceptive in a way. They will not practice safe sex and when they get pregnant and realized that they are not ready to be parents- they go to a clinic and have the baby aborted. This act should be punished by law. If only the government would regulate this activity, people will be more careful and will have more regard to the sanctity of life. Abortion should not be the first solution to the inconvenience unwanted pregnancy might have to some people. If one is not ready to become a parent- practice safe sex and do not murder an innocent life. Sadly, abortion is also a political issue as much as it is a moral one. Some politicians will ride the issue on abortion to get votes and yet nothing is being done. The article “Abortion: A Moral and Political Issue” is a good reminder that votes should not be based solely on the this particular issue but should extend to a wider spectrum of life, human rights, birth control problems, religion and legal precedence (Sharpe, 1999).
