ISD Article Study, Essay Example

Essay

Hodell’s 1999 paper “Basics of Instructional Systems Development” provides a good outline of the process associated with instructional systems development (ISD). A somewhat clunky metaphor compares the role of road maps in common road travel with the function of ISD in the learning process. The two systems provide structured guidelines that can be vital to the success of the end-user (provided they take advantage of the available tools). The article continues with a clarified definition of ISD, identifying several qualities that are found in most typical ISD systems (including analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation). Additionally, experts on the eventual subject matter are not needed during the ISD process, giving them more time to focus on curricular material, while designers tend to the supporting ISD framework.

The ADDIE Model of ISD

The article then focuses on a popular ISD model that is known by the acronym ADDIE (representing the qualities described above; analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation). Each characteristic is regarded as as a step in the ISD process, and specific examples are provided to better outline the duties of the designer that are associated with each stage. The remainder of the paper explains each stage of the ADDIE system by emphasizing the importance of being thorough, using the appropriate techniques, and keeping schedule. Several interesting supplements appear in these sections to add further information about various important topics, such as making sure to follow the structural guidelines.

Analysis

Analysis is required to begin evaluating the nature of the problem being addressed by the training material. Developing an ISD system is a waste of resources if the issue is not solvable by training, such as when systems governing information access interfere with the performance of job duties. Other parts of the analysis include profiling the target population, the selection of an appropriate existing training platform if available, the consideration of resource requirements, and the examination of any remaining sources of potential problems

Design.

ADDIE systems next enter the design stage. This process includes the creation of a work map that will guide the rest of the procedure. Additional materials are virtually always required to complete the design phase, and may include printed aids, multimedia, staff assignments, and evaluation tools.

Development

Development is as the most easily observable stage of ADDIE. During this step, supporting materials are created for the target instructional program (whereas previously created materials contribute to the design process).

Implementation and Evaluation

After the training begins, the various pieces of the ISD system are closely observed for any initial signs of. Any treatable concerns will then be addressed as the system is refined. This is an example of how evaluation plays a part in the entire ISD process, although it is specifically identified as the final step in common methods.

Conclusion

The article concludes by discussing how the steps of ADDIE are combined to form a well rounded system. The authors then make several suggestions that will help people find their own path to creating an effective ISD program. In total, Hodell’s paper provides both the information and motivation necessary to impact potential ISD designers.
