One of the most artistic ways of preserving a culture is architecture and the mosques over the centuries are reflection of Muslims conquests’ ambitions. Two things I particularly noticed in all of the mosques in the video areminarets and domes. Another characteristic is their huge size as if Muslims wanted mosques to be a symbol of their military conquests and rules. Even Kaaba, which is the holiest place for Muslims, has gone through a huge transformation over the last century.
Jama Masjid in Delhi, India had a striking resemblance to Badshahi Masjid in Lahore, Pakistan and after I researched, I found out that both buildings are the outcome of Mogal rule in India, hence, the striking similarities between their architecture. I also noticed that mosques built by Mogul rulers extensively incorporated the red color which might be due to use of red brick or stones used in the construction.
Great Mosque of Djenne may not be as popular as its counterparts such as Jama Masjid in Delhi or Great Mosque of Cordoba but it is the most fascinating building to me due to its unique mud-based structure. At first glance, it looks like ruins and I never thought that such a huge mud-based architecture exists in the world. This mosque has impressively incorporated many elements of African architecture into its building.
