Job Selection Tool, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 298

Essay

Probably the most utilized selection tool is job interview and for a good reason. Job interviews allow recruiters to get to know applicants personally and also give them the opportunity to assess applicants for their compatibility with the open position. While resumes reveal important information that could be used to shortlist the applicants list, they do not reveal certain important information such as applicant’s soft skills, personality, and attitude. Another benefit of interviews is that if a recruiter has a question about something in the resume or seeks further explanation, he can do so in the interview.

I once gave an interview for a part-time consulting position and the company’s owner himself recruited new employees. The interview began in a structured manner and the interviewer also went through certain items in my resume. After a while, the interview became unstructured and the interviewer started testing me on the concepts I had studied in some of the courses. He asked me to explain concepts in a manner that even non-business majors could understand them and follow with examples. After a while he inquired about my interests as well as the people I admire and why I admire them. Coincidentally, one of the person I mentioned also happened to be the one interviewer’s father also admired and he started telling personal stories of his father. By the end of the interview, he assured me he would be getting back in touch.

When I think about the interview now, it is obvious that the interviewer was testing my knowledge as well as learning about my personality and my interests. My answers gave him a good idea of who I was as a person besides my formal qualifications and experiences and whether I would be a good fit into the company’s culture or not.
