Thesis Statement: Kant’s concept of the categorical imperative establishes a necessary foundation for all philosophical thought.
- The concept of the Imperative.
- Kant defies hypothetical reasoning by insisting on an absolute morality.
- The Imperative relies on human will as an instrument of authority, in that each human adheres to moral standards applicable to all.
- Arguments refuting the validity of the Categorical Imperative.
- It is outside the realm of reason to insist on moral absolutism, as history clearly indicates no such entity.
- The Imperative permits too open an interpretation of morality, as the only standard to which it is held is that of individual sensibility.
- The Imperative is flawed because it requires an ethical correctness by no means inherent in humanity, collectively or individually.
- Counter-arguments in support of Kant’s concept.
- That history evinces no consistent evidence of a moral absolutism cannot serve to deny the existence of one.
- There is rational evidence supporting that most individuals, no matter their choices, possess an awareness of right and wrong, and this alone validates the imperative.
- This awareness of moral correctness in place, the Imperative requires only that people turn to it, which provides further evidence of its existence.
- Conclusion, restatement of thesis.
