Essay

The Mission statement of Kentucky Fried Chicken is defined as “To sell food in a fast, friendly environment that appeals to pride conscious, health minded consumers” (Kentucky Fried Chicken, 2010). The firm has cited the following company objectives:

  1. Improve product development
  2. Improved involvement with neighbourhood development programs with emphasis on targeting African Americans with “Menu items target African Americans in major cities with the following items: Greens, Macaroni and cheese, Peach cobbler, Red beans & rice” (Tripod, 2010)
  3. Implementation of outlets in non-traditional units like Hospitals, Universities etc.
  4. Increased profitability of KFC via “Reduced overhead costs, Increased efficiencies, Improved customer service, Cleaner restaurants, Faster and friendlier service, Continued high quality products” (Tripod, 2010)

KFC was ranked as the 6th largest fast food retailer in the USA but it also has a significant international presence particularly in Mexico.  “By the end of 1994, KFC was operating 4,258 restaurants in 68 foreign countries. KFC is the largest chicken restaurant and the third largest quick service chain in the world. Due to market saturation in the United States, international expansion will be critical to increased profitability and growth.” (Tripod, 2010). Production facilities are decentralized on a global basis. KFC is adapting its products for different target markets. In the USA it is focusing on the African/American market.

KFC

KFC essentially adopts international strategy of efficiency in operations and flexibility (see the model above). The organization structure has become much more reliant on distributed management since 1992 “In 1992, KFC continued with another reorganization in its middle management ranks. They eliminated 250 of the 1500 management positions at corporate and gave the responsibilities to restaurant franchises and marketing managers” (Tripod, 2010).

Teamwork is essentially at the local level by a series of distributed franchises. “KFC is part of the two PepsiCo divisions, which are PepsiCo Worldwide Restaurants and PepsiCo Restaurants International. Both of these divisions of PepsiCo are based in Dallas.” (Tripod, 2010).
