Specific Purpose: To explain the development of unions in addition to their benefit.

Central Idea: Worker safety was minimal prior to the establishment of strong unions.

Introduction

  • Labor unions became necessary after workers were required to engage in many dangerous practice
  • In 1911, the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory burned to the ground (History); 145 people died
  • This brought attention to poor working conditions

Problems with Working Conditions

  • There was no ventilation in factory rooms
  • Workers needed to work more than 12 hour work days
  • If a worker complained about conditions, they would be fired

Protecting the Rights of Workers

  • Once the terrible conditions of workers in New York City and other large cities was revealed, the concept of forming labor unions became more prevalent
  • Workers across the country needed to fight for their ability to feel safe at work
  • This led to a state and federal minimum wage in addition to working laws
  • Labor unions stated that it is unfair to work a day that is longer than 8 hours or a week that is 40 hours
  • Employees are paid time and a half, or another form of additional compensation, for hours worked outside of the normal workday
  • Safety regulations have been put in place
  • Many employees now have benefits including vacation time and health insurance
  • Fire codes are now required (Holley 85)

Individuals Against Unions

  • Individuals that do not support labor unions often believe that having unions in place will cost businesses too much money
  • However, these added expenses contribute to the bettering of society in the long run
  • Our economy and standard of living has increased significantly since 1911
  • Our buildings are safer, our people are happier, and our productivity has increased significantly

Conclusion

  • Labor unions and the government work together to make change happen
  • We must fight for change
  • Forming strong labor unions will continue to be important
