Employees are trained in their environment of work and thus they make use of the tools as well as equipments that are applicable in accomplishment of their roles. They also receive specific training and the supervisors are more experienced and therefore, they are able to acquire high levels of confidence. The trainer is able to guide such employees towards correct job performance, they can point out possible errors and they also give constructive feedback. Learning on the job is also tailored to meet distinctive needs of the organizations workforce.

Learning on the job has some disadvantages as well. The person entrusted with passing the knowledge may not be proficient enough. Programs of mentoring and training employees may sometimes involve piecemeal delivery of training to the workforce and may lack sufficient planning and thus the training is rendered sub-sufficient and therefore not effective to the employee and the company.

Formal leadership training be more advantageous than an informal setting when employees are made to participate in structured leadership training programs

The Conger’s four categories are:

  1. Personal Growth. This deals with identification of true self and involved learning that is associated with self-exploration along with higher echelons of self awareness.
  2. Understanding of Conceptual Approaches. This implies to the type of learning that involves formal acquisition of theoretical knowledge
  3. Feedback means looking through mirror and it entails the use of appraisal instruments by leaders so as to gain knowledge of how their style of leading is perceived by others.
  4. Skill Building which involves mastering the Zen of leadership that is achieved through assisting the leaders to master definite desirable skills through training along with practice.

Pursuing a big dream is a step in the process of learning to lead. The aspiration of becoming perfect leader are expressed through the big dream and this is how the two connected.
