Occupy Wall Street movement has been grabbing headlines for about two months now and has inspired similar movements on a global scale now. The movement’s supporters claim that their protest is against corporate greed, economic inequality, and corruption and they are merely exercising their right to free speech. But actions speak louder than words and the protestors have not only violated others’ right to freedom of action and speech but have also gone against the American spirit of bringing change through actions rather than demands. The on-going protest does make one wonder about the true intentions of the protestors who are eschewing more effective channels to bring change in favor of protests.
A recent news article in The New York Post mentions the protestors’ announcement to shut down subways on Thursday this week and how some protestors have been comparing their movement to China’s Tiananmen Square tragedy. The protestors are aware of the fact that their actions are meant to disrupt normal business and yet they do not hesitate to claim their right to freedom of speech and action. Their actions are nothing but an act of delusion because unlike China, the U.S. is a democracy where human rights are respected and governments are elected by the people of the United States. If protestors truly want change, they could do so by influencing their elected officials and yet they do not seem to place any blame on the government. In America, we do not believe in entitlement but in hard work and this is what separates our nation from the socialist nations.
The protestors should realize that the financial crisis has been a global event and even the governments failed to predict the crisis. Corporations make tempting targets due to their enormous sizes but we should not ignore their economic contributions towards American prosperity. Recessions are economic reality and difficult times require practical actions and not blame games. Many of the demands being made by the protestors can be achieved through peaceful political means and protests will only damage their cause. An opposition to the protests doesn’t mean there is nothing wrong with the capitalist culture but every society has problems and America is no different. Executives’ compensation has even been criticized by some of the most successful individuals in America such as Warren Buffet yet these same individuals have also supported government’s rescue of the troubled organizations as well as the importance of corporations to the American economy. While some of the positions taken by the protestors may be just but their actions will only lose them public support.
Like most of my fellow Americans, I do believe in accountability but at the same time I also believe in being pragmatic. There has never been a dearth of ideas in America and American political system is one of the most democratic in the world. It is ironical that the protestors claim to be the 99% and yet they do not realize their political power. It is my sincere hope that the movement’s leadership will take a step back and rethink as to how they can achieve their objectives without being disruptive.
