I want you to know what it means to be an African American.  Although we are a minority ethnic group living in the USA you have a proud heritage.  Our family emigrated from Ghana to the USA in order to seek a better quality of life.  The African / American community is one of the well-established migrant populations in the USA.  In general terms our people have had to strive for cultural and political recognition in the USA. In part this was due to the stereotyping and prejudice resulting from the Slave trade from Africa to the America’s.  Despite the ongoing civil rights struggle it is important to recognize that Africa was the cradle of civilization and our peoples brought a distinct cultural heritage to the New World.

Here are three things that make us similar to other people: (i) we  are now part of a global community  and whilst we are US Citizens we acknowledge the importance  of our cultural heritage  (ii) We contribute to American Society (iii) We enrich the US culture by our African culture.  The three things that are often associated with differences to American people are (i) We are of a different ethnic origin (ii) We have had to fight for recognition and our civil rights   (iii) We acknowledge and respect our native African heritage  and are proud of our roots and culture.

So it is important that you understand the need to be proud of your Ghanaian / African roots and to respect your family, friends and ancestry of a proud and cultured society of people.
