Reaction Paper

Can anyone sit in a chair made of cardboard? Why anyone would say that this thought is insanely impossible. Nevertheless, in this experiment, surpassing such a thought is the ideal aim and making something new out of the ordinary was the target of the group. Starting with an idea and landing on a plan that would direct the group towards choosing the most viable chair design, the creation of the lightest cardboard chair has been given birth.

The plan started with all the conditioning of the materials in relation to the symmetry that each design yielded. Through brainstorming, the team collaborated to create three basic models of chairs that are to be the standard source of inspiration for the actual chair to be created. In the process of brainstorming, the ultimate question of whether or not the chair would be able to hold or carry anyone at all challenged the creators hence making this aim as their central reason for the designs created.

Out of three designs, the triangular base was the primary choice and was deemed to have the strongest capacity to at least hold anyone. Having extra attachment cardboards within the triangle dedicated for support, the base of the chair has been strengthened by a series of parallel cardboards placed to establish its triangular shape. The creation of a well-established system that would impose on the strength of the base is just one part of the process. Establishing the back support also creates a firmer foundation that could hold the weight of the one seating on the chair. In this case, making a full cardboard to stand as the back support is seen to have a great impact on the establishment of the good support for the entire chair. In the end, the testing results to successful condition as the chair was able to support at least 100 pounds. Although the test was rather successful, it is expected that future projects could still improve the design and aesthetics of the chair probably even improving its capacity to hold a person who could be weighing even higher than 100 pounds.
