Logistics Engineering, Essay Example

Logistics engineering helps organizations answer important questions regarding the purchase, transport, storage, distribution, and warehousing of products (Malakooti, 2013). By considering these various factors with regards to management of the supply chain, it is plausible to determine how to maximize profit by analyzing which operations could maximize sales while minimizing related costs of production. Logistics engineering is related to the concept of system engineering because systems engineering encompasses logistics. System engineering considers the broader aspect of the product life cycle and its influences on production. Thus, logistics engineering and systems engineering are related concepts, but logistics engineering focuses more specifically on purchase, transport, storage, distribution, and warehousing practices (Ramo et al., 1998).

The use of logistics engineering is highly applicable in the modern industry because it helps organizations determine how they can engage in effective practices. By determining the cost of materials, what methods and routes can be used to transport them, in addition to where they can be stored can help a company determine how to save money on their manufacturing by determining the permutations involved with these variables. In the modern setting, logistics engineering is an important focus because it shows that simply calculating different alternatives for a business can help professionals gain a better understanding of what they need to do to make their businesses more successful. Some professionals may examine logistics engineering from a broader scope of system engineering because this study includes many characteristics that interact with logistics engineering. However, others choose to focus exclusively on logistics engineering because they believe that this is the area in which they can make the most significant impact on their involvement in the industry.
