Logistics for an International Competitive Advantage

The developments of ISIS forces in Syria during the past several weeks were explored from the perspectives of CNN (2015), CNN International (2015), BBC (2015) and the VOA (2015).   The language and the tone of the reports will be compared from a semantic perspective. Analyses were drawn with regards to the language and the message that the news agencies sought to convey.

CNN

The first article was written by Shubert, A, Naik, B.  & Thompson, N. (15 April 2015). ‘The deepest circle of hell‘: Terrified Yarmouk residents describe ISIS raid.  CNN. The article communicates the helplessness of the Palestinian refugees that had been located in the Syrian camp of Yarmouk. The ISIS forces raided the camp.  The article details that “They slaughtered the residents in the streets…The Islamic State is now in control of almost all of the camp” (Shubert et al., 2015).

CNN International

The second article that was reviewed by CNN International was written by CNN (25 May 2015). Human rights org.: ISIS executed 11 children. CNN International Edition. Nick Paton Walsh discusses the manner by which the ISIS forces assaulted and systematically murdered children during their military campaign on Palmyra (CNN, 2015).  The language that was conveyed in the article demonstrates the severity of the situation.

BBC

The third article which was reviewed with regards to tone and language was inscribed by BBC (25 May 2015). Islamic State crisis: Iraq will take back Ramadi ‘in days’- PM Abadi. BBC News.   The tone and the language applied in the report details that the ISIS Forces “have not been winning” (BBC, 2015). The article discusses the shock approaches that have been applied by the ISIS forces and the manner by which the shock and awe approaches used by ISUIS dismayed the larger Iraqi forces (BBC, 2015).

VOA  

The fourth article that had been emitted by the VOA (2015) included in a series of videos which were detailed in Arabic. The reporter simply filmed the actual footage of the ISIS forces members in Yarmouk. The visual message is clear. The video is titled: toPeTE GLZ (6 April 2015).  Siria- Damasco Yarmouk- ISIS combate contra la FSA.  You Tube. The video demonstrates the successful and systematic raid of the ISIS forces on the town of Yarmouk.

Conclusion                                                                         

The four different news reports provided perspectives which are different. The news is clear. The ISIS forces presently control over fifty percent of the nation of Syria and almost one third of the nation of Iraq. The news articles were reported in such a manner whereas the language that had been applied was designed to appall the viewer. This type of graphic reporting is a method used by reporting agencies to motivate the viewer toward action.
