Long-Term Issues for the Adopted Child, Essay Example

Many adopted children in their adult years face critical challenges that are derived from their lack of understanding or awareness of their biological histories. This reflects a pattern that occurs throughout the life span that only grows from childhood into the adult years, as there is likely to be much confusion regarding individual biological roots and a perceived lack of connection to these roots. Therefore, it is suspected that many adults who have been adopted will experience bouts of limited confidence, self-esteem, and general emotional turmoil throughout their lives, depending on the experiences that they have had. From this perspective, it is often suspected that adopted children in their adult years will continue to struggle with their biological heritage if it is unknown and may discover a loss of personal identity, low self-esteem, and limited focus on the greater good during the life span.

There are significant social, emotional, and biological components to human existence, and these are exacerbated in different ways when there is a struggle to understand one’s blood identity and heritage (Patricelli).  In retrospect, these issues must be addressed directly with adopted children in the adult years through open and honest communication to address concerns as they emerge. The discussion to identify influences and perspectives may divulge issues regarding personal self-esteem and confidence.  These concerns must be addressed as they emerge because they may positively influence individual behaviors and approaches to self-confidence and self-esteem. Nonetheless, the loss of biological parents at an early age is a significant influence on adopted children in their adult years, and must be examined through a complex and multifaceted lens to stimulate interest and discussion in this topic.
