Lost In the Barrens, Book Review Example

Lost in the Barren’s is a story that was authored by Farley McGill Mowat in 1956. There are two main settings in this story, including Jamie’s boarding school and Angus’ cabin, the Barrens.There are a total of 6 characters in this story. 4 of these are major characters and 2 are minor characters. Jamie is the main character, whose parents died in a car accident and went to live with his uncle. He therefore must adjust to his new life, and faces many adventures along the way. Awasin is Jamie’s friend, who is a Native American and the son of his tribe’s chief. Jamie and Awasin are the most important characters because the story follows their adventures together.

This book is interesting because it demonstrates that nature is a challenge that man could conquer. Throughout the book, the boys need to learn how to hunt in order to survive, and they manage to make it through. Furthermore, through this, they show that they are both very smart and mature a lot as the story progresses. After reading the book, I believe that the author wanted to write a story about friendship, which he shows through the interactions between Jamie and Awasin. Jamie needs help getting over the car crash that his parents were involved in, and his adventures through the wilderness helped him grow. Even though his new life couldn’t possibly replace the value of his parents, his newfound maturity has helped him grow as a person, which is equally as important in life as good parents.

I think this was a good book because it was well written and tells a good story. The adventure with the two boys was exciting, and I would likely read something like this again in the future.
