Making Characters More Believable, Essay Example

Essay

The middle-aged man of Asiatic origin, sporting an equally Asiatic thin long beard and long hair somewhere between the colors of grey and red, stood at the bus-stop with a nervous and questioning pose, directly contrasting with his physical image, which suggested a stoic guru who had already achieved Enlightenment a thousand times over.

The man looked at the crowd of people who had gathered at the bus-stop; it had seemed like he had been there for a long time, as he had not boarded any of the buses that had passed. It turned out that he was anxious for conservation; he wished to engage those around him.

Fumbling about in his coat pockets, he looked around to see the next person he could converse with, nervously anticipating the reaction of the autobus commuters. He turned towards a younger woman who had just arrived at the stop, now making the long hair trailing down his back until his waist visible. He stated a few words, inaudible sounds, and the woman did not respond with any words of her own, instead merely shaking her head in a negative gesture, and then awkwardly seeking out another place to stand at the bus-stop , not wishing to partake in conservation with the nervous guru.

The Asiatic man, seeing that the woman did not wish to speak to him, did not press her any further, and instead turned his attention to a middle-aged woman. He did not wish for anything in his words, merely wanting to talk. He nervously introduced himself and this woman’s reaction was the same as the previous woman’s reaction: she greeted him and then sought a refuge from his words further away.

He stroked his beard, and seemed to understand his loneliness, choosing not to bother anyone else. The bus arrived, the commuters boarded it. He, however, did not, as he was waiting for something else.
