Management vs. Leadership, Case Study Example

Case Study

One of the largest attributes Art has to follow during this transition is communicating with his team. He has been a manager for so long that he has not learned that communicating with his team is of great importance on an everyday basis in order to understand their perspectives, views, opinions, and ideas. He has to be willing, as he did, to take a little time out of each day to regroup and speak directly to his staff so that he can learn who they are on a personal level. He needed to show his staff that he cared about them and their opinions. In addition, Art needed to show that he had the ability to be innovative, inspiring, and goal-oriented for the long run. Good leaders focus on the long-term goals, challenge themselves and their teams to go above and beyond the status quo and the call of duty, and show their teams that they have visions and dreams for specific things to happen within the organization that they are running. Art would be able to do all of these things just by communicating his desires to his team and helping them understand what he wants from all of their hard work. He can also do this by showing them physically that he is involved in the decisions and that he can work with them to reach a common goal. By doing this, it shows his employees that he wants to be a part of the day to day operations of the department and gives them the sense that he can be approachable and trusted. His communication and presence with his team is of utmost importance if Art wants to be the leader that his team is looking for during this difficult and challenging period.

I believe that some people are actually born with the qualities to be a leader; however, I also believe that anyone who wants to be a leader can attain by knowledge the abilities to do so. If someone truly wants to lead a team, he or she can, but that person must be willing to learn from other leaders and must be willing to put in the effort to make changes in his or her personality and traits in order to maintain leadership within his team. There are many individuals who are born with such innate qualities, however. These individuals do not have to work as hard to develop their leadership abilities as they have been leading all of their lives. It really depends on the person, the environment they grew up in, and the influences in their lives. I believe this because I have seen this first hand. There are many people in my life that I can look at and know they were born with leadership qualities because they take charge, they inspire, the give back, and they help others develop their own skills. However, I also have people in my life that have no leadership ability at all and are more focused on the idea of getting things done and are more management focused. As stated in the reading, this isn’t a bad thing necessarily, but it is always good to have leadership qualities. Someone in the public eye that I believe is a leader would be Oprah. She is not specifically focused on the ways of doing things and managing her team on and off the set, but she is focused on changing lives, giving back, helping others develop their own strengths, inspiring others to do good and collectively allowing her team to make mistakes and learn from them. She molds people and helps them become better people. In contrast, I believe that our own President is a terrible leader. He is focused more on the day to day activities of his job rather than making a difference throughout the United States. He does not have the leadership qualities that it takes in order to provide our nation with the best of the best. He doesn’t listen to his people and he doesn’t communicate clearly. These are things an individual must have in order to be called a leader and he does not have them in my opinion.
