Massage-Parenting Enhancement Program for (SAM) Recovering Substance-Abusing Mothers & Premature Babies

In the Untied States approximately 4.6 million child-bearing age women use cocaine regularly and more than 700,000 births per year which are drugs-exposed, maternal substance abuse point out the impact of using drug that are considered multigenerational has high risk and threat to our children (Lamanna, and Riedmann, 2011). Poor effects of parental substance use cause not solitary neurological and physical impairment of the infant, but also the deteriorating mental health of maternal, poor affection of maternal-infant, and inadequate effectiveness of parenting. Substance abuse get worse the difficulty of attachment because of the guilt of mother, poor personality, and lacking confidence of parenting, influencing the neonate to neglect, abuse, and abandonment. When the post- birth influences of drugs worsen the ability of infant to present cues clearly and favorably reply to the action of mother, the ability of mother to reply properly can also be reduced (Porter, 2008). So in this case these babies need more care than in required normal situation because of the consequences of in-utero drug disclosure; however, drug addiction worsens the ability of mother and motivation to give even nominal care to her infant. Several Substance Abusing Mothers (SAMs) are the poor parenting victims by themselves and because of lacking knowledge of infant behaviors characteristic, often having impractical expectations about the abilities of children and babies. Intervention programs that establish on the normal components of early interaction between infant and mother are crucial for the reversal of these pathological conditions and breaking the addiction cycle. Even though the integration of vocational, educational, and social treatments, in addition to day-care and parenting classes into rehabilitation programs based on drug, child abuse, physical, and neglect, emotional and mental deficiency remain persistent in the babies of substance-abusing mothers (SAMs) (Alvy, 2001). One well documented intervention and a developmental program help on high-risk infants and babies is Infant Massage-Parenting Enhancement Program (IMPEP) for recovering substance abusing mothers and premature babies. Infant Massage-Parent Enhancement Program (IMPEP) is a dedicated and not for profit organization for establishing a society where parent of young age and every child enjoy the stable, safe and loyal relationships required to achieve their potential (Lamanna, and Riedmann, 2011). This program (IMPEP) serves the potential parents and parents, young and teenage fathers and mothers having the age from13 years to 25 years. The IMPEP program presents a system to help in rehabilitating SAMs by creating cognitive-behavioral adjustments with the help of modern knowledge about parenting skills and parenting particularly focusing on stimulation of infant through massage. Infant massage as rehabilitation therapy has been identified under numerous terms for example the “hands healing” and “lying of hands” (Dorsey and Sciarra, 2010). The infant massage has four basic beliefs for body treatment: effleurage, tapotement, petrissage, and friction. Effleurage make use of hard and light and stroking that result into better circulation of blood to heart and vessels. Tapotement process hits body-parts with the hands sides quickly. Petrissage involves the particular body-parts compression with rubbing, kneading, and squeezing motions, whereas the friction exercise movements that are circular which go into the skin deeply with more force and all this help babies to recover rapidly (Ackley and Ladwig, 2010). In short, IMPEP established on the belief that mothers are the main family health resource and primary caregivers. Its primary purpose is enabling the substance abused mother to become responsive and confident mothers and make them powerful parents.
