Introduction
McCarthy and Harlem are the point of discussion by giving clear comparisons and contrasting on the American dream by looking at how abuse or use of alcohol limits they intention. The American dream is an aspect thought by many individuals in the globe and will go to any means to achieve it since it is referred to as a place with green pastures. However, the responses made lie on the negative and need clarification in order to guide individuals on how to achieve their American dream without engaging in illicit behaviors. For McCarthy, who embodied the American dream through his life endeavors, is a good reference point to the issue at hand. The topics under scrutiny gives insights on how individuals interfere with their life changing plans contributing to aspects of development.
Compare
The American Dream as an aspect thought and fought for by many people around the globe, but how to embrace the opportunity differs and needs enhancement and promotion.Awareness programs on available opportunities in America for indigenous people will reduce the chances of them wasting precious time, and talent on engaging in illegal activities like substance use. The two aspects contrast because one is associated with those who eye towards attaining their life goals (long-term) and the other looks at short-term goals. It is evident that by attaining the American dream, individuals fulfill long-term goals and aspirations that spill over to future generation enhancement and prosperity. However, use or abuse of alcohol for others is a means that triggers theirthinking, but it lasts only for a short time. This needs acknowledgment in order to enable people attain their American dream and improve their living standards.
Use or abuse of alcohol is a component common to many because it is a means of doing away with stress and depression in a strange land like America. Consequently, this is not the way forward because it entails engaging in illegal activities in order to get resources for supply of the drug. Fitzgerald attributes this behavior to those who are literate, but waste their talent, opportunity and knowledge to vices that pull them down. According to McCarthy, the American dream is embraced by those who understand their meaning of the sacrifice made by their parents and family members in giving them their life dream. The sacrifices made by family include taking them to counseling when they engage in abuse of alcohol. Harlem, on the otherhand, differs with McCarthy and Fitzgerald by arguing that alcohol abuse is generational and not a stress reliever agent.
Contrast
McCarthy and Fitzgerald bring out awareness programs on alcohol abuse and use by African American groups, and other immigrants who go to America in search of greener pastures.Harlem also agrees with argument, and contributes to the debate by giving examples on how many school dropouts in America are because of substance use and abuse at a very tender age.Despite the intervention, of family members and health care practitioners, these teenagers waste their lifeand are driven by peer pressure. Peer pressure needs expansion to reduce the chances of these groups of people falling into temptations of using alcohol, which deprives them of the opportunity to explore their strengths and opportunities.
Additionally, the three artists agree that alcohol abuse or use is a vice that lowers one’s status in the society since they engage in activities that result in loss of self-esteem. It is clear and urgent for individuals to distinguish between threats and opportunities. Thus, McCarthy advocates for differential measures distinguishing power and abuse. This reflects on developmental processes promoted by individuals in workstations and learning institutions. Government officials are encouraged to support programs that help rehabilitation centers create awareness in learning institutions and the community.
Harlem contributes to this topic, by giving real life examples, on how the substance has affected the life of many teenagers with varied definitions on why they use the drug.Researchers give varied descriptions of how alcohol is used, but to many, it is a stimulant. Some people are given the drug to relieve pain, which is medicinal for their part, but for those who abuse the intake of alcohol, over exploit their use, and this leads to abuse. They have gone to the extent of even abusing their peers, colleagues and family members when under the influence.African American people living in the USA use the drug due to stress of getting a job and by dealing with drug lords, they earn so much money in a short period. Harlem advocates for measures that will create awareness and reduce the chances of being in contact with the alcohol.
Subsequently, it is true to say that all three of them agree to have measures that create awareness to the young people on the consequences and results of using or abusing alcohol. Even though, they present their arguments differently, they all stand and support one theory of abolishing drug abuse and use among adolescents. They should ensure that they achieve their dreams of coming to America and thus, need guidance. By using and abusing alcohol people do not attain their American dream of growing big and developing their families back at home, but instead run from law enforcement authorities who want to deport them for abusing their scholarships. Many times teenagers want to be given the opportunity of achieving their dreams in a foreign country, but if granted, they waste it away. This fact needs to be changed, in order to trigger the sponsors, and increase scholars going to developed countries in an aim to attain knowledge and bring development to their home countries.
Conclusion
Alcohol abuse or use is something practiced by many in the world and has hampered developmental opportunities and exploration of talent. Therefore, advocacy measuresput in place need emphasis in order to promote growth and development both to the individual and economy around the globe. Governments and other institutions need to collaborate in ensuring that the menace curbing because it contributes to lower levels of GDP.The drug reforms are sensitive and critical hence; both McCarthy and Harlem need to be careful when dealing with alcohol use or abuse issue.
