Abstract
This research paper focuses upon the implications of nonadherence of hypertensive patients in taking prescribed medication. The research will involve both empirical and qualitative research using instruments like questionnaires, surveys and interview of a random sample of patients in a health clinic setting. It is anticipated that the research will benefit both patients and medical practitioners in helping to understand both the importance and significance of maintaining medication where there is a diagnosis of hypertension.
The research has been structured into a number of discrete parts. Part 1 provides the Introduction and Background to the research. This provides the hypothesis or thesis statement that defines the problem that the research will address. In addition it provides a definition of hypertension and the risks that this illness represents if left untreated or is neglected via not maintaining the prescribed medications. Part 2 provides a Literature Review of the subject area and as such provides an insight into the journals, books and other peer reviewed articles that have addressed this problem. There is a large literature database in this subject area and this has become an increasing area of attention given the high proportion of Americans that are at risk of hypertension in the United States and indeed throughout the world. There is a need for more or additional research to be conducted in the genetic factors of hypertension and why certain ethnic groups seem to be at a higher risk category. Hypertension has been linked to obesity and as such links to diabetes. There are already links that indicate African /Americans are at increased risk in both of these areas. Part 3 is the main analytical body of the research and contains both the Primary and Secondary research components. This section will also include the tabulation of findings and analysis of the results. Part 4 will be the conclusions of the paper that include the re-examination of the hypothesis and how this was addressed. This section will summarise the key results and provide a guide on recommendations and the practical implications for practice.
The paper will contain a detailed bibliography that will provide useful references for further research and reading in this area.
